⚠️

Important: When to Contact Your Doctor

While recovery is usually straightforward, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience:

  • Severe pain that doesn't improve with prescribed medication
  • Heavy bleeding that soaks through bandages
  • Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or foul odor
  • Fever over 100.4°F (38°C)
  • Difficulty urinating or inability to urinate
  • Separation of the incision or wound edges pulling apart

Trust your instincts. If something feels seriously wrong, seek medical attention.

Your Recovery Timeline

Days 1-3: Immediate Recovery

Focus: Rest & Protection

The first few days require the most rest and careful attention to your surgical site.

  • Expect moderate to significant swelling and bruising (this is normal)
  • Keep the area clean and dry as instructed by your surgeon
  • Take prescribed pain medication on schedule
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing—tight underwear or pants can cause discomfort
  • Sleep on your back or side to avoid pressure
  • Apply ice packs (wrapped in cloth) for 15-20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling
  • Avoid any sexual activity or arousal
Days 4-7: Early Healing

Focus: Gentle Movement & Hygiene

Swelling begins to decrease, and you'll start feeling more comfortable with movement.

  • Continue gentle cleaning as directed—often brief, lukewarm water rinses
  • Change bandages/dressings according to your surgeon's instructions
  • Some light activity is okay, but avoid strenuous exercise
  • You may notice some discoloration (bruising fading from purple to yellow/green—normal)
  • Stitches may start to dissolve or loosen (if dissolvable)
  • Continue avoiding sexual activity
Weeks 2-4: Active Healing

Focus: Patience & Protection

Most of the dramatic healing happens during this period, but you're not fully healed yet.

  • Swelling should be significantly reduced
  • The incision line will be clearly visible but healing
  • You can gradually return to normal (non-sexual) activities
  • Light exercise may be permitted—ask your doctor
  • Still no sexual activity—this is crucial for proper healing
  • Your surgeon may schedule a follow-up appointment
  • Begin moisturizing if cleared by your doctor (important for long-term healing)
Weeks 4-6: Clearance for Activity

Focus: Gradual Return

Most men are cleared for sexual activity around 4-6 weeks, but always confirm with your doctor.

  • Get explicit clearance from your surgeon before resuming sexual activity
  • Start gently when cleared—your body needs time to adjust
  • Use plenty of lubrication for any sexual activity
  • The incision line may still be slightly tender
  • Continue moisturizing daily
  • Full cosmetic appearance continues to improve over the next several months
Months 2-6: Full Healing

Focus: Final Adjustments & New Normal

Your body fully adapts to your circumcised anatomy.

  • Scar line fades and softens (though remains visible)
  • Swelling completely resolves
  • Sensitivity patterns stabilize
  • Final cosmetic result becomes apparent
  • You're fully adapted to your new anatomy
  • Continue daily moisturizing for optimal comfort and sensitivity

✅ Daily Care Checklist

Follow your surgeon's specific instructions, but here are general care guidelines:

🚿

Gentle Cleaning

Rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid soap initially unless directed. Pat dry gently—never rub.

💊

Pain Management

Take medications as prescribed. Don't wait until pain is severe—stay ahead of it.

🩹

Bandage Changes

Follow your surgeon's schedule for changing dressings. Keep the area protected but allow airflow when safe.

🧊

Swelling Control

Ice packs (wrapped) in 15-20 minute intervals. Elevate when possible. Avoid tight clothing.

👕

Clothing Choices

Loose boxers or no underwear. Soft, breathable fabrics. Avoid anything that causes friction.

🛌

Rest & Sleep

Sleep on your back or side. Use extra pillows for support. Avoid stomach sleeping initially.

🚫

Avoid Arousal

Erections can be painful and disrupt healing. Avoid sexual content, fantasies, and physical stimulation.

💧

Hydration

Drink plenty of water. Stay hydrated to support healing and reduce the need to strain while urinating.
